Who was Arshed Shareef?

 Journalist Arshad Sharif was a highly respected journalist, author, and television news anchor who made a name for himself in investigative journalism and worked for national and international news organizations as far away as the UK.

On 23 March 2019, the President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi, awarded Journalist Arshad Sharif with the Medal of Excellence for his excellent performance.

He was shot dead by police in Kenya on October 23, 2022.

Journalist Arshad Sharif has been the host of the ARY News program Powerplay and also worked as a director in AAJ News.

Prior to joining AAJ News, he was the Director of Dunya News. He hosted the program "KIUN" in Dunya News.

Journalist Arshad Sharif was born in Pakistan's big city, Karachi, his father is Muhammad Sharif, who has been commander in the Pak Navy. He started his journalism as a freelancer in 1993 when he was a student.

After obtaining a Master of Science degree in Public Administration from Quaid-e-Azam university, Islamabad, he entered journalism.

Journalistic life;

He started his first job with the weekly publication Plus where he worked as a columnist, reporter, and managing editor. In 1999, he stayed in The News and in Dawn Daily in 2001. He handled defense and foreign affairs with great skill and ended conflicts in Federally Administered Tribal Areas. He reported for London, Paris, Strasbourg, and busy Pakistan news agencies. Journalist Arshed Shreef won the Awareness Award in 2012. Arshad Sharif as an anchor and Adeel Raja as a producer won the 2016 Investigative Generalism Award for the program Powerplay. In 2018, Arshad Sharif was honored with the People's Award for Awareness. He started his program PowerPlay on ARY News in 2014. Journalist Arshed Shreef served as a director in Dunya News channel agency and AAJ News and as a bureau chief in Daily Dawn (2001).

Arshad Sharif conducted an interview with PTI leader Shahbaz Gul in August 2022, after which he was charged with rebellion, as well as many more allegations. To avoid them, Journalist Arshed Shreef left Pakistan and moved to Dubai and then went to Kenya after staying there for some days.

DEATH;

Journalist Arshad Sharif was shot dead by local police in Kenya on October 23, 2022, which was reported to be a case of mistaken identity and social media speculated that it was a murder. On October 24, Kenyan police announced an investigation into Sharif's death.

Investigative Committee;

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the formation of an inquiry committee on the murder of journalist Arshad on October 26, 2022. According to the notification, a two-member committee comprising Federal Investigation Agency Headquarters Director Athar Waheed and Intelligence Bureau Deputy Director Umar Shahid Hamid will visit Kenya and submit its findings to the Interior Ministry. In Kenya, the investigative team met with the Acting Police Chief of Kenya and representatives of the Pakistani High Commission in Kenya to discuss the Arshad Sharif murder case. They recorded the interviews of two brothers, Khurram Ahmed and Waqar Ahmed, who provided accommodation and other services to Arshad Sharif during his stay in Kenya. Kenyan authorities also seized Arshad Sharif's iPad and smartphone.

The team that went to Kenya to investigate the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif returned to Pakistan on November 8, 2022, after conducting an inquiry. In Kenya, the investigation team collected information about Arshad Sharif, the team also obtained support from the Pakistani embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for better fact-finding and submitted the report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Judicial Inquiry;

Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandyal was told by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that he has formed a judicial committee for a fair and credible investigation into Journalist Sharif's murder. The Chief Justice requested the Prime Minister to form a commission comprising available judges of all the highest courts to investigate the circumstances surrounding the journalist's murder.

  The panel may focus on five issues regarding the surrounding circumstances;

1.   In August 2022, what steps did Sharif take to go abroad and who made those arrangements?

2.   Was the threat given to Arshad Sharif known to any federal or provincial agencies or institutions?

3.   What circumstances and motivations forced Arshad Sharif to go to Kenya from the Arab Emirates?

4.   What actually happened during the firing incident that resulted in Arshad Sharif's death?

5.   Is Arshad Sharif's death a product of mistaken identity or is it a criminal game?

After that, the Prime Minister announced in this context that the Federal Government will provide full support to the Judicial Committee, A commission consisting of high officials was sent to Kenya for inquiry.

Reaction;

Pakistan and abroad were shocked by the news of Arshad Sharif's murder. Pakistan's President Arif Alvi called Journalist Sharif's death a great loss for journalism and Pakistan. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed this murder as sad news. 

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter that he is shocked by the brutal murder of Journlist Arshad Sharif, who paid the ultimate price for speaking the truth and gave his life.

Afzal Butt, president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalism, expressed his grief over the news and demanded an investigation into Arshad Sharif's murder. Journalist Kamran Khan took to Twitter to ask the government to take the nation into confidence.
